Q. What is the zapper?

A. The zapper is a hand-held electrical device run on a 9 volt battery. It delivers a tiny electrical current to the body by holding a short copper pipe in each hand. The device operates at a particular frequency (about 20,000 Hz) that is believed to stun or kill microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites). The zapper is a very simple machine that we have found to have many uses. We use it as one of our frontline defenses in situations involving microbe-based illness (along with Young Living Essential Oils and homeopathics).

Q. How is the zapper used ?

A. Hulda Clark recommends using the zapper in a particular way. This involves three consecutive zaps lasting 7 minutes each, separated by a 20-minute wait period. Hulda's reason seems difficult to substantiate, but is given as follows: the first zap kills parasites that release a host of bacteria as they die, the second zap kills the bacteria that release a host of viruses as they die, and the third zap is to kill the viruses. Hulda claims that one might experience a ‘viral bloom’ the three consecutive zaps are not completed. There have been many times when I have zapped only once or twice, having fallen asleep or been otherwise distracted in the middle of a zapping session, and can report no ill effects. However, I have also experienced times when I had a slight headache after the first zap only to have it disappear, as fast as it came, after a subsequent zap. My policy is to make every reasonable effort to complete the three consecutive zaps. Additionally, we have discovered that a longer zap of 15 or 20 minutes (or more), rather than 7 minutes, seems to work better in some instances. We call this the “super zap” which usually happens when we fall asleep holding the pipes or forget to set the timer etc. If the first set of zapping doesn't have the desired effects, we go for the super zap.

Q. How does the zapper work?

A. The device itself simply takes the output of a 9-volt battery and pulses it about 20,000 times per second. This pulsed DC electrical current is delivered to the body by holding, in each hand, a copper pipe wrapped in a wet paper towel. The device consists of a 555 timing chip, four resistors, two capacitors, a light, a switch, and a battery. In the zapper that I make from a standard sized jewelry box, all the electrical components are exposed. There is nothing hidden. The box can be opened to see the way the components are connected (exactly as described in Hulda Clark's book The Cure For All Disease (link to Amazon) ).

Electricity travels along the path of least resistance between two points. The body has extremely complex bioelectrical characteristics which make it difficult for me to conceive of what exactly that path would be. Does the current travel through the blood, which is in constant motion? Does it travel along the network of connective tissue called facia, which has its own unique electrical characteristics? Does it travel only on the surface of the skin? The answers to these questions are unknown to me and I am willing to entertain the possibility that the zapper may effect the entire body either directly or indirectly. Having observed live human blood, using darkfield microscopy, I have come to the conclusion that aging and disease can be viewed as a rotting process. The sicker someone is, the more their blood seems to be deteriorating (or that they are sick, because their blood is deteriorating). If the zapper works as a preservative (anti-microbial), as is suggested by the chicken leg experiment, then it could be providing the body's weakened defenses a chance to overcome the microbial onslaught. It may be working as an aide against the rotting process. Alternatively, or additionally, I have glanced through some research suggesting that small doses of electricity can potentiate the body in a variety of ways. If this acts on the immune system, the microcurrent may function to ‘wake up’ a sleeping immune response. This should be testable by evaluating white blood cell activity before and after zapping. I’m not aware of this having been done. It seems that the general bias against Hulda Clark, because of her exuberant, inappropriate, and possibly illegal claims, has blinded most of the medical community to the possibilities of the zapper. As such, not much real research has been done. As time and money permit, I will be putting this device through a more rigorous investigation. Until then, I am convinced based on personal experience that the zapper is both safe and effective.

Q. How will I react to zapping?

A. While most people report no discernable sensation or negative reactions from zapping, a few people have reported experiencing, what are typically considered to be, general signs of detoxification after zapping. I interpret this to be a consequence of microbial die–off. These signs include headache, rash especially in abdominal area, intestinal pain or cramping, or darker urine. If this is indeed caused in people with high microbial loads, then increasing water intake and flushing the body with vitamins, minerals, and herbs recommended for detoxification would probably be helpful. If there are concerns, stop zapping, and consult your favorite qualified and respectable source for medical advice. Also, some people have reported experiencing a “viral bloom” if they zap only once or twice instead of the recommended three consecutive times.

Q. How do I care for my zapper?

A. Since the electronics are unprotected, it is wise to keep your zapper dry. Also, there is a small computer chip so strong radiation or magnetic fields may affect it. Otherwise, it’s a tough little thing. One friend with four children commented to me that she didn’t think her zapper was working. When she brought it to me, it was barely recognizable. It clearly had been dragged, stomped, and battered through heavy use. The corners were totally rounded and the box squashed. It had been wet several times judging from the water (or other liquid) stains. I opened it up and inspected the connections and was shocked to find it in complete working order. The only problem was the alligator clip attached to the copper pipe had been separated from its wire (which requires some serious yanking to achieve). It turns out that the children would routinely fight over it. So, if you have a large family, it may be practical to get more than one zapper. Another friend brought her zapper to me after her dog had chewed it. It also was totally fine, if not a bit misshapen.

Q. How do I know when to replace the battery?

A. The light on the zapper is a low current LED and as such is not a good indicator that the battery is fully functional. I use two methods to evaluate battery power. First, I turn the zapper on and put the pipes on either side of my tongue. I can feel a faint zap across my tongue and then I know the zapper is working and can evaluate the strength of the current. Alternatively, I take the battery off, put it up to my tongue to test the battery by itself. I can compare it to a fresh battery. If you have a battery tester, that would be more accurate. The batteries I use, and sell, for the zappers have no mercury or lead in them. Conventional alkaline batteries use mercury and/or lead, thus present environmental concerns. Electing to use a rechargeable battery would be more environmentally conscious. For a longer lasting battery, I recommend a lithium 9V battery available at RadioShack for about $8.

Q. I can't feel anything, how do I know my zapper is working?

A. Many people are sensitive enough to feel the current in their hands. I usually cannot feel this, so I rely on the tongue method. I hold the pipes up to each side of my tongue and turn the zapper on. This produces a mild shock feeling across my tongue.

Q. Should I use distilled water to wet the paper towels?

A. The purpose of the wet paper towels around the copper pipes is two–fold: first, to provide a better conductive surface and second, to prevent any copper from entering the skin due to the electricity. Since we need the water to be conductive, it is not recommended to use distilled water. However, there is probably enough conductive material in paper towels that even using distilled water would probably work …I haven’t checked.

Q. Is there any maintenance to the zapper?

A. No. The only aspect to zapper maintenance is to replace the battery as needed.

Q. Does zapping affect the whole body?

A. Hulda Clark states that zapping reaches everywhere in the body except the center of the eyes, pockets in the teeth, inside of liver and gall stones, or the lumen (open space) of the intestines. How she knows this is not revealed. We feel it is useful to direct the current to particular places in the body that are relevant. For example, if I feel that I have a sinus or ear infection, I will put the pipes on either side of my head. If I have intestinal issues, I’ll put one in front and one in back. Since the current passes between the pipes, I keep my hands separated when zapping. As far as parasites go, I believe that the zapper does affect peripheral tissues. For this reason, when doing a parasite program, I combine zapping, to get the body tissues (brain, muscles, lungs, reproductive organs, etc.), with a herbal intestinal program. Since parasites can infest every organ in the body, I think a herbal intestinal program is insufficient.

Q. Does zapping kill friendly bacteria in the gut?

A. I have heard people claim that zapping does affect intestinal flora. To this end, one might want to take probiotics after zapping. I have also heard that zapping does not affect intestinal flora, that the flora are imbedded in the mucosal lining and as such are not subjected to the current. If this is true, zapping would also not effect intestinal parasites unless they are imbedded in the wall of the intestine. For this reason, I do both a zapping and herbal intestinal parasite program before doing the liver cleanse.

Q. Is there a right or left hand aspect to the zapper?

A. I used to make zappers with different colored wires and as a result got this question a lot. I now make them with both wires the same color to avoid the confusion. The answer is, to my knowledge, there is no reason to keep track of which pipe is in which hand.

Q. What are the contraindications? (When should I NOT use a zapper?)

A. The only stated contraindications for zapping are if you are pregnant or if you have a pacemaker. There is no evidence that I know of to address the degree to which these precautions are valid. Since it remains an unknown, the warning remains: don’t zap if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker. As is true for everyone, zap at your own risk . We have zapped ourselves and our infant children (even as young as two weeks old). While we observe no obvious negatives, it is not possible to definitively say whether there are long–term concerns. As far as our children are concerned, their teeth haven’t fallen out, their hair seems normal, and they seem generally healthier than most children their age.

Q. Can I take my zapper on the airplane?

A. Given the present security concerns, I would not recommend attempting to take a zapper on the airplane. Check it in your luggage. If there are any questions, tell security exactly what it is. I would also disconnect the battery before putting it in my luggage, just in case it gets turned on and runs the battery down. We used to carry the zapper in our carry–on before 9/11, and it survived the X–ray machines and we were never questioned. I have talked to people who have mailed their zapper to themselves to avoid traveling with it. I’m not sure this is necessary, but it is certainly an option.

Q. Does the zapper affect the frequency of the body?

A. The frequency of the zapper is 1000x lower than the frequency of the body, i.e. kiloHertz vs. MegaHertz. In addition, the current is so low as to be barely detectable (2 milliamps).

A more esoteric answer: I experience the zapper as being harmonic with a particular layer of the body’s aura — about 14 inches out. The zapper appears to have a stimulating effect on this layer. I do not know the significance of this, I am only reporting my observation. Additionally, we have experienced feeling "disharmony" (energetically) after zapping. We apply Young Living essential oils (especially, Valor, Harmony, White Angelica, or Thieves) and this immediately balances the energetics.

Q. Is the zapper necessary for the cleanse?

A. The zapper is not necessary for the parasite program. According to Hulda Clark’s research, it is “necessary” to do a parasite program before doing the liver/gall bladder cleanse. She hypothesized that parasites are actually blocking the bile ducts; therefore, stones cannot get out of the liver. Dr. Clark also discusses using black walnut hull tincture. I think Young Living Parafree is a good parasite program. I personally use both zapping and Parafree — they have different actions and complement each other to provide, what I consider to be, a more complete parasite program.

We have talked to many people who have done the liver/gallbladder cleanse with and without the parasite program and kidney cleanse as preparation. They report that they got much better results having done the preparatory work. Additionally, we've talked to people that did not do a parasite program before the liver/gallbladder cleanse and felt terrible during the cleanse or got sick afterward.

Q. How does the zapper attach to the body, if not by wrist bands?

A. As for the zapper, it is a very simple construction. You hold a copper pipe wrapped in wet paper towel in each hand. There are some disadvantages to this design compared to having wrist attachments, but we’ve found it to be quite versatile. The ability to put the pipes on various body parts to focus the current on a specific area, is one example. We’ve also found it very convenient when zapping our children and pets — because we are able either to hold the pipes on them or hold them in our laps while zapping.

Q. What is your opinion concerning the QuackWatch report on Hulda Clark?

A. One of the reasons I wrote the Cleansing Notes booklet is to extract useful information from Hulda Clark's book, which contains a disturbing amount of inaccurate information and what I consider to be radical perspectives and advice on many topics. I feel that her ideas on the connection between pollution and parasites are sound but over-simplified. On these issues, I generally agree with various dissenting write-ups such as that presented in QuackWatch. On the other hand, I feel many people tend to be too critical and end up overlooking certain medical facts, such as the well-documented connection between certain intestinal parasites and cancer of the liver and pancreas (for example).

Amy's response to this question:
As far as the QuackWatch on Hulda Clark …I read everything with a filter — what I know to be true, my intuition, and with a scientific critique (is it good science methodology). I'd say both QuackWatch and Hulda Clark need to be filtered. What I have read from both tends to be extreme (obviously opposite extremes). Peter wrote his Cleansing Notes booklet because Hulda Clark's book is so extreme. If you want to be paranoid about parasites and toxins, read her book. She also contradicts herself in several ways throughout the book. However, I think her basic principle that disease is caused by toxins and parasites is sound. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I also think that each person will have a different way to approach this principle in their own healing journey.

As far as the information on legal issues concerning Hulda Clark, I would not give over my power to her — just as I would not give over my power to an M.D., or anyone else for that matter. Now that I know the power of health is in my hands (and I will answer to God for how I've used that power), I'm not giving it away!

As to Quack Watch, I haven't read over his entire site; however, I wonder if he holds allopathic medicine to the same standards as alternative medicine.

As to the efficacy of the Zapper (I have no experience with the Synchrometer), I can only site my own experience. I believe that since we've started using the zapper as one of our health tools, the frequency, duration and intensity of our illness (i.e. cold, flu, etc.) has decreased. We have heard of people doing experiments on a chicken leg with the zapper — they zapped the chicken leg everyday and it didn't visibly rot for 2 weeks. We have not yet replicated this or any other experiment with the Zapper.
